Rock star Jon Bon Jovi recently joined city officials in an unveiling ceremony for yet another low-income housing project that he is financially supporting. The new 55-unit, $16.6 million complex will provide homes for low-income renters and those who previously were homeless.
What Bon Jovi has done to support low-income housing
The Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2006 by rock star Jon Bon Jovi . The organization works with other non-profit organizations and community leaders to create homes for low-income and homeless people in areas that include Pennsylvania; Newark, New Jersey; Detroit, Los Angeles, Colorado, Louisiana and South Africa. The organization's mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
The latest JBJ Soul Homes project opened in Philadelphia's Francisville neighborhood. In addition to Bon Jovi's support, the new four-story building received financing from both public and private funds. Residents will not only get a home but also receive social services from Project HOME (Housing, Opportunities, Medical, Education), a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness in Philadelphia. Project HOME wants to build 500 more units across the city; 200 are already on the schedule.
Not a handout
Bon Jovi explains how important the housing assistance is for low-income people who need a chance to get back on their feet. "This is not a handout, it's just a hand up," said Bon Jovi. "This opportunity for them is special and it's not easy to come by."
